William “Bill” Lewis Haywood

William (Bill) Lewis Haywood, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on March 13, 2023 with his family by his side.  William was born November 2, 1935, in Columbus, Georgia, to his parents, Martha Corrine and William Henry Haywood.  

William grew up in rural Georgia and later relocated to Barberton, Ohio.  After graduating from Barberton High School, William enlisted in the Ohio Army National Guard where he served from September 12, 1955, to September 11, 1963, obtaining the rank of Sgt 1st Class in the 137th Armor Co.  On September 5,1959, he married his wife Nancy E. Carpenter, and together they shared 63 years of marriage.

William spent over 40 years in the ceramic industry working all over the country, including The Ohio Brass Company in Barberton, Ohio, Coors Porcelain in Denver, Colorado,Diamonite Products in Shreve, Ohio, Ferro Porcelain in East Liverpool, Ohio, Superior Technical Ceramics in St. Albans, Vermont, and finally Homer Laughlin China Company, Newell, West Virginia, where he retired after 24 years as a Ceramic Engineer and foreman of his department. William enjoyed many hobbies, including hunting, fishing, gardening, wine making, and taxidermy.  William had many passions, however, his true devotion was to his family.

William is survived by: his wife at home, Nancy; a son, William Jr. (Dorothy) Haywood; daughters: Tracy Haywood, Jennifer (Wesley) Smith, and Rachel (Dave) Ulbright; 7 grandchildren: Shawn McClellan, Samantha, Jake, Josh, and Zach Smith, and Hunter and Katie Ulbright; a brother, Pat (Barbara) Haywood; and half sister, Cindy (Glenn) McElroy.

William was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Jerry Haywood, and grandson, Kyle Smith.

Public visitation will take place on Friday, March 17, 2023 from 3PM-5PM at Care Funeral & Cremation Specialists- Martin Chapel, in Calcutta . The Tri-State Burial Group will be present to afford full military honors.  A private family funeral will be held after.
