Samuel Coles Jr., 93, of Wellsville passed away at his residence on Friday, November 17, 2017 following a lengthy illness.
He was born in South Pittsburgh, Tennessee on December 11, 1924 a son to the late Samuel Coles Sr. and Helen (Hill) Coles. Living his life in this area, he was a graduate of Wellsville High School and a veteran of the United States Army serving with the Tuskegee Airman during WWII. He received pilot training at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama as one of the African American pilots serving during WWII. While in school, he was a Boy Scout Master for troop 19, played varsity football, basketball and ran track for four years. Samuel worked as a machinist for NRM in Columbiana for 23 years before retiring and a member of the First Baptist Church in Wellsville and drove a garbage truck for Wellsville for many years.
He is survived at home by his wife Mauricia (Lambo) Coles whom he married in April 15, 1972; three sons: George Coles of East Liverpool, OH, Maurice Coles and Lawrence Jody Coles both of Indiana; three step-sons: Rolando Lambo of California, Luiz Lambo of Columbus, OH and Diago “Dennis” Lambo of Calcutta, OH; four daughters: Tina Coles of Indiana, Bernadette Carter of Wellsville, OH, Mary Lou Coles of Charleston, WV and Ruth Coles of Charleston, WV; a step daughter: Felipia Lambo of Wellsville, OH, seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren along with his furry friends: Lady Bug, Midnight and Eban.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two daughters: Yvette Coles and Deborah Coles and two sisters: Elizabeth Thompson and Wilma Jackson.
Services will be held at the Wellsville Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 11 AM with Pastor Dirk Hall of the Living Well Church officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Family will be present to receive friends at the Wellsville funeral home on Monday, November 20, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM.
