Neil R. Sanders, 82, of Martins Ferry passed away on Saturday October 2nd, 2021 at Forrest Hills in St. Clairsville, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine A. (Stubbs) and Hugh G. Sanders of Hamilton, OH; 2 half brothers, James and Harry Shields and his first wife of almost 44 years, Martha R. (Lewis) Sanders.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia J. (Ashbrook) Sanders of Martins Ferry, OH; sons, Gregory (Sherry) Sanders SR. of St. Clairsville, OH, Lance (Tara) Sanders of Cambridge, OH; a sister, Deborah K. (Grubb) Sanders of Columbus, OH; stepchildren, Glenda Bodemann of Martins Ferry, OH, George Ashbrook of Columbus, OH, Gail Meyer of Wheeling, WV; grandchildren, Greg Sanders Jr., Torrie Sanders, Lindsay Bodemann, Keith Meyer, Taylor, Kennedy and Kaitlin Sanders.
Neil was retired from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and his last assignment was a Lieutenant (Post Commander) of the St. Clairsville Post (1978-1990).
He graduated from the Ohio State Highway Patrol 61st class, April 11, 1963.
He has an associate degree from Sinclair Community College, Dayton, OH in Applied Sciences. He was a graduate of S.P.I. (Southern Police Institute) University of Louisville, Louisville, KLY. He also completed the B.O.L.D. program (Bachelors of Leadership and Development) at Wheeling Jesuit University, Wheeling, WV. He attended classes at Case Western University, Cleveland, OH, Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH, Northwestern (N.U.T.I.) University, Evanston, IL, Ohio University Eastern, St. Clairsville, OH.
Other than his family, his proudest accomplishment was being an Ohio State Highway Patrol member. A career highlight was being selected as Patrolman of the Year in 1971.
He will be missed by some….
