John “Jack” Gallagher, 85 of East Liverpool, Ohio passed away at Weirton Medical Center on Sunday, May 12, 2019 following a brief illness.
He was born in East Liverpool on October 3, 1933 a son to the late John James and Virginia Margaret (Sinclair) Gallagher. Living his entire life in this area, Jack was a 1952 graduate of East Liverpool High School and attended Kent State University where he obtained an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. and worked as a police officer for the Wellsville Police Department before retiring in 1995, where he was named Juvenile Officer in 1971 until his retirement. Jack helped build the Jim Kenney Community Center and was honored as a Wellsville Legend in 2009. He played softball in the Chester City League. He created the Bicycle Rodeo in Wellsville. He also was an avid Notre Dame and Pirate fan and enjoyed hiking out at Beaver Creek and attended Holy Trinity Parish, where he was an usher and volunteered for FISH.
He is survived by two brothers: Gary Gallagher and his wife Sherry of Wellsville, OH and Dan Gallagher and his wife Mary of Edon, OH; a sister: Judy Whitehead and her husband Bob of East Liverpool, OH; a sister-in-law: Cheryl Gallagher of Missouri; twelve nieces and nephews and eighteen great nieces and nephews; he was “Uncle Jack” to all the family and our friends.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother: Bob Gallagher.
Services will be held at the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes in Calcutta on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 11 AM with Pastor Larry Rose officiating. Burial will take place in Riverview Cemetery where the Tri-State Burial will accord Military Honors
Family will be present to received friends at the Calcutta funeral home on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 from 4 to 8 PM.
Memorial Contributions may be made in Jack’s name to the FISH Foundation.
