John J. Malik Jr.

June 18, 2023

John (Jack) Justin Malik Jr.

Jack died June 18, 2023 in St. Clairsville, OH.

He was born February 4, 1928 in Bellaire Ohio, a son to the late John J. Malik Sr. and Alice (Hora) Malik.

He is survived by 3 children:
Michelle (John) Holler, Greg (Cheryl) Malik and Leslie (Al) O’Connell; 4 grandchildren: Lauren (Layne) Mehl, and William, Kathryn and Daniel O’Connell; one great grandchild, Cohen Mehl.

Jack graduated from Bellaire High School in 1946 where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He is enshrined in the Bellaire High School Athletic Wall of Fame. He was also Bellaire High School Alumnus
of the Year in 1996.

After graduating from B.H.S., Jack served in the U.S. Army Armored Infantry and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. After being discharged he attended John Carroll University and later transferred to
Notre Dame University where he received both his Bachelor and Law degrees.

Following graduation he entered his father’s law firm which was established in the 1930s. He served as Bellaire City Solicitor from 1958 to 1964, Belmont County Prosecuting Attorney from 1965 to 1976, Belmont County Commissioner from 1986 to 1991, and the Common Pleas and Juvenile Judge of Belmont County from 1991 to 1998.

Ever active promoting the welfare of the citizens of Belmont County, Jack was instrumental in numerous county endeavors. He spearheaded acquiring land on State Route 331 where the Belmont Correctional
Institute is located. He was also instrumental in acquiring lands where the Belmont County Industrial Park and the Belmont County Park District are located. Jack was also active in establishing the Park Health Center in St. Clairsville.

During his judicial tenure Jack instituted a program for juveniles called Concentrated Conduct Adjustments Program (C-CAP). Similar to a military boot camp, C-CAP is an alternative to a juvenile
detention center. The implementation of this program led to Jack, with two other partners, to found New Horizons Youth Center. This novel institution housed troubled male juveniles.

A highlight of Jack’s accomplishments was his promotion of the Belmont County Chapter of the Ohio Cancer Research Associates. He, himself a two-time honoree of the Grand Illusions event to benefit Ohio
Cancer Research.

Jack also was the owner operator of Jack’s Floral and Garden Center for approximately 25 years.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Adrianne (Carroll) Malik, and a son, John J. Malik III.

    Gigi Piehowicz Zaccagnini says:
Jack was such a kind hearted gentleman. He and Dad were hilarious when they’d get together. I remember them cutting wood together, poker games in the basement and who could forget them driving the old green school bus for the 7th and 8th grade team when Jay played. Please except my condolences.
