Jan R. Burke, Sr., age 78, of East Liverpool passed away at the Hospice House in North Lima on Sunday, February 17, 2019, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
He was the son of the late Charles R. and Sarah (Manypenny) Burke. Jan was born in East Liverpool on July 24, 1940 and lived his entire life in this area. He was a graduate of East Liverpool High School, class of 1960. He had been employed at the Y.M.C.A. and Pine Ridge Camp for 25 years, Penn Power for 10 years and last worked for the Hively Construction Co.
Jan was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and a member of the Lock Ten Bass Club, of which he had served as its Co-Founder and President.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Mary Suzanne (Jennings) Burke, of East Liverpool. Two sons: Randy Lee Burke and his wife, Debbie, of Hamler, Ohio, Jan (J.R.) Burke Jr, of Bartow, Florida, two daughters: Shawn Marie Burke of East Liverpool and Mary Kay Helscel and her husband, Bill, of Leetonia, Ohio; two grandchildren: Nathan and his wife Ashley of Hamler, OH and Jeremy Robert Burke of Tallahassee, FL; four brothers: Charles (Butch) Burke of Virginia Beach, VA., Keith Burke and his wife Becky, of East Liverpool, Jon Burke, and his wife Kim, of Suffield, OH, and Larry Burke and his wife Amber, of Akron, OH and one sister: Sharon Keith of Marietta, OH and a sister-in-law: Lois Burke of Wellsville, and many nieces and nephews; three step-children; 5 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jan was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Burke.
Jan’s two great loves in life were going fishing and telling stories with friends and family.
Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Friday, February 22, 2019 at 11 AM with Pastor Steve Knisley of the church officiating. Burial will follow in Columbiana Co. Memorial Park.
Friends may visit with family at the funeral home on Thursday, February 21, 2019 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes and for one hour prior to the time of service at the church to receive friends.
Memorial Contributions may be given to East Liverpool YMCA in form of scholarships for underprivileged youth or First United Methodist Church of East Liverpool.
