Charles “Jerry” Cornell, 82 of Calcutta, OH passed away on Monday, May 13, 2019 at Heritage Valley in Beaver following a brief illness.
He was born on July 2, 1936 in Portland, Ohio a son of the late Charles E. Cornell & Pauline (Watson) Cornell. He attended East Liverpool High School, but he graduated from Bellevue High School in Omaha, Nebraska and was a veteran of the United States Air Force, where he was stationed at the Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, NE serving during the Korean War. Living most of his life in this area, Jerry worked as a crane operator for Crucible Steel until it’s closing in 1982. He then went on to become an independent truck driver before going to work at J & L Steel as a crane operator until he retired in 2000. Jerry was a member of the Shriners, the Aut Mori Grotto, he was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Negley Lodge #565, he belonged to the United Steel Workers Union Local 1212, the Teamsters Trucking Union Local 92 and the East Liverpool Old Timers Baseball Association.
He is survived at home by his wife Judith E. (Shallcross) Cornell whom he married December 16, 1961; a daughter: Cheryl Eller and her husband Edwin of McGaheysville, VA; two grandchildren: Chandler R. Cornell and his fiancé Danna Talbott and Charles Jacob Cornell; two brothers-in-law: Robert Shallcross and his wife Robin and Mark Shallcross and his wife Debbie; two sisters-in-law: Patty Morris and her husband Larry and Carol Railing; seven nieces and seven nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son: Charles “Chuck” Cornell; a brother: Jack Cornell and a sister: Wanda Skelton.
Services will be held the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes in Calcutta on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 12 PM with Rev. Tim Bauler of Longs Run Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will take place in Riverview Cemetery where the Tri-State Burial Group will accord full military honors.
Family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home in Calcutta on Friday, May 17, 2019 from 4 to 8 PM where Masonic Services will be held at 7 PM.
