Caryle F. Buck 81 of Calcutta passed away at the Hospice House in Poland, Ohio on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 following a lengthy illness.
He was born in East Liverpool on February 6, 1938 a son to the late Clyde and Helen (Gradwell) Buck. Living all of his life in this area, Caryle attended Washington and Horace Mann Grade Schools and was a 1956 graduate of East Liverpool High School and served a 5 year apprenticeship for pipe fitting and welding. He started in the Plumber and Pipefitters Union in 1957, retiring in 2000 after dedicating 43 years to Local Union #490 serving as President of Local Union #490 for 21 non-consecutive years. Caryle joined the Riddle Masonic Lodge #315 and Scottish Rite Valley of Steubenville for 53 years, and was a member of the OSIRIS Shriners Association in Wheeling, WV; the Northern Panhandle Shrine Club in Weirton, WV; Al Koran Oriental Shrine Band in East Liverpool; York Rite Bodies East Liverpool Chapter, Council and Commandery Knights Templar and Al Koran Shrine Club of East Liverpool for 48 years and served as President from 2001-2002.
He was instrumental in opening the Plumbers and Pipefitter Local 490 Trade School in Toronto, OH in 1972. He taught welding at the school and at Jefferson County Technical School. Caryle served on the advisory Board at the Columbiana County Joint Vocational School in Lisbon, OH from 1978-1990 when welding was first introduced at the school. He owned Caryle Buck & Sons Welding Company from 1982-1992. He designed the official flag for Saint Clair Township in 1983 as a “Calcutta Lions” project. It is displayed at the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Home in Calcutta. He was a charter member of the Contemporary Historical Vehicle Association (CHVA) Antique Car Club and served as President from 1985-86 and 1997-98. Caryle worked construction on the East Liverpool High School Alumni Building from 1987-1992, was a past member of the Lions Club, president of the East Liverpool Alumni Association from 2007-2012, a member of the First United Methodist Church in East Liverpool where he received an award from the United Methodist Women and served as Chair on the Board of Trustees from 2008-2016. He also was a member of the church choir and participated in the Community Holiday Christmas Choir along with the Trinity “Easter Pageant on the Hill”. He received the Community Builders Award in 2014 from the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the East Liverpool Rotary Club where he received the “Paul Harris Award” in 2014. He was a recipient of the “Distinguished Alumni” award in 2016 from the E.L.H.S.A.A. He received the “Shining Star” Award for F.I.S.H. in 2016 from WTOV and was a coordinator of the F.I.S.H. Food Pantry of East Liverpool retiring in 2018.
He is survived at home by his wife Jean Hall, an ELHS 1958 graduate, whom he married March 28, 1959; together they raised four sons: Jeffrey Buck of Calcutta, OH, Randy Buck and his wife Lori of Lisbon, OH, Brian Buck and his wife Myra of New Waterford, OH and Darrin Buck of East Liverpool, OH and a daughter: Cindy Cross and her husband Bill of North Lima, OH; 10 grandchildren: Justin Buck and his wife Deidre, Felicia Quinn and her husband Joe, Austin Buck, Makala Buck, Dakoda Buck, Arrianna Buck, MaitLynn Buck, Eric Cross and his wife Karly, Garrett Cross and his wife Emmy and Brayden Cross and 3 great grandchildren: Joey, Emma and the 3rd being born this month.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother: Bob Buck and a sister: Connie Buck Bingham.
Services will be held at the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes in Calcutta on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 2 PM with Pastor Stephen Knisely of First United Methodist Church officiating.
Family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home in Calcutta on Saturday, June 8, 2019 from 2 to 8 PM where Masonic Services will be held at 7:30 PM and on Sunday from 12:00 PM until the time of service at 2 PM.
Memorial Contributions may be made in Caryle’s name to the F.I.S.H. Foundation.
